The Atomium survives and participates in the collective memory more than any other building from the World’s Fair of 1958. Originally built to endure only for the period of the Fair, the Atomium became exhausted, corrosion overtook it and a significant renovation was required. In 1998, the DMA workshop offered to supplement the Atomium restoration project by assigning it a new life function without denaturing the familiar landmark. The " tenth ball », suggested by a glass dome emerging from the ground as a fractal matrix, houses a convention centre or a play area with a scientific character.
